Linguistic origins
Norwegian has ancient origins and derives from Old Norse, the language spoken in the Viking period between the 8th and 14th centuries. During the Middle Ages, Norwegian split into two main forms, Nynorsk (New Norwegian) and Bokmål (Book Tongue).
Nynorsk is based on the traditional rural roots of the Norwegian language and was created in the 19th century as an attempt to preserve Norwegian tradition and counteract Danish influence.
Bokmål, on the other hand, is a form more similar to Danish. It is the most used form at a national level and is taught in schools.
